Better Search with Apache Lucene and Solr

Abstract:
Apache Lucene is a high-performance, easy-to-use se ar ch libr ar y in use in many l ar ge scale, production environments. Apache Solr is an enterprise class se ar ch server built on Lucene that demonstrates many Lucene best practices in addition to offering many exciting, standalone features. This topic will introduce attendees to the basic se ar ch concepts (analysis, indexing, relevance ranking) using Lucene and then examine how Solr brings these concepts to the enterprise by providing replication, caching, faceted browsing and easy configuration. The talk will also cover best practices and interesting usages.

About the Speaker:
Grant Ingersoll is a Senior Software Engineer and Principal for a Boston-based startup and a committer on the Lucene Java project and a member of the Lucene PMC. He has been developing commercial and research systems in Java for over 11 years. Grant has used Lucene for implementing many different applications, ranging from basic search applications to cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) applications, question answering (QA) and collection analysis and customization applications. Grant is also the author of the "Search Smarter with Apache Solr" series at IBM developerWorks (http:// www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-solr1/)
