Triangle Java Users Group Presents:

Software Remodeling: Improving Design and Implementation Quality

presented by Al Mannarino

Monday, May 21, 2007
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

4001 E. Chapel Hill-Nelson Highway
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina

Abstract:
Apply automated software inspection and run-time analysis tools to help identify common problems that can cause performance and scalability issues. Discuss the problems found and demonstrate how tools can help accelerate the implementation of appropriate solutions.

* Find:

o Apply software quality audits (check for common coding errors and enforce standards)
o Apply software quality metrics (measure object-oriented design characteristics such as complexity, cohesion, and coupling)
o Reverse engineer structure and behavior (Reverse engineer class diagrams and generated sequence diagrams)
o Apply Application Quality Analyzer (analyze components for performance issues, detect misuses and identify errors)
o Discuss discovered problems (excessive temporary objects, dead code, highly complex methods, etc.)
o Generate documentation

* Fix:

o Discuss principles of software remodeling (audits/metrics, design patterns, refactoring)
o Create JUnit tests (code with confidence)
o Apply simple refactoring (modify design without breaking existing code, verify impact of refactoring)
o Apply pattern-based refactoring

About the Speaker:
Al Mannarino is currently a Lead Systems Engineer for CodeGear (formally Borland's Developers Tools Group). Prior to transferring to CodeGear, his last 5 years was spent as a Senior SE helping to sell Borland's ALM/SDO solutions. Al has over 25 years of Software Development experience including OOAD and the responsibility for developing and deploying production applications. Prior to Borland, Al was an SE for Objectivity, Versant, Red Brick Systems, Information Builders, and an Electrical Engineer with Grumman Aerospace where he performed real application implementations on complex electrical-mechanical systems. Al has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College.
