Triangle Java Users Group Presents:

Lessons Learned While Writing a Java Mailserver

presented by Richard Hammer

Monday, January 15, 2007
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

4001 E. Chapel Hill-Nelson Highway
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina

Abstract:
Our speaker shares basic lessons learned while writing a Java mailserver, one which eliminates spam by charging unlisted senders. Learn how an email message is transmitted. Review socket programming, protocol programming, SMTP and POP3. Examine the structure of an email message (envelope and body) noticing the built-in vulnerabilities to spam. See JSP collection of payments from PayPal, complexities of SMTP sending, generation of delivery status notifications. Share reflections on fighting spam.

About the Speaker:
Richard O. Hammer has worked as a programmer, electrical engineer, house builder, libertarian think tank manager, and programmer again. He would have a Ph.D. in computer science from UNC-CH were not for the pesky expectation to assemble a dissertation committee. He has published many papers on voluntary formation of social orders, and sees spam as a living laboratory in law. Rich has been an active member of TriJUG since late 1999, has served two years on the TriJUG Board, as Treasurer and Webmaster.
